Tide baseball tryouts

The Chesapeake Tide, an 8-U and 9-U travel baseball team, will hold tryouts through the fall and winter for players in the Southern Maryland area. Players cannot turn 9 or 10 years of age by May 1, 2013, depending on the team. The team has an indoor training facility. For more information, call Butch Britton at 410-586-9400.

Gretton Goalkeeping will conduct weekly small group and personal training for youth soccer goalkeepers and field players throughout the Southern Maryland area for the fall season through the week of Nov. 12.

Youth basketball

St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks will hold youth basketball registration for children.

Children in third- to eighth-grades can register from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at Esperanza Middle School in Lexington Park, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 at Lettie Dent Elementary School in Mechanicsville and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 15 at Leonardtown Middle School.

Registration can also be done online Nov. 1 to 16 and registrants can also come by the main office in Leonardtown during this time period. The cost is $80.

Children in the first- and second grades can register from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 1 at Lettie Dent, Leonardtown Elementary School and Esperanza.

Registration can also be done online Nov. 1 to 30 at www.stmarysmd.com/recreate and registrants can also come by the main office in Leonardtown during this time period. The cost is $45.

Junior coaches program

St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks are recruiting individuals to take part in its junior coaches program, which will begin this winter sports season.

The program is designed to provide additional sports-related opportunities for high school students and to set a standard for effective coaching. A maximum of six coaches will be selected for the first year of the program. First-year coaches are not eligible to participate.

St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks will hold youth indoor soccer registration for children 4 to 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 15, 20 and 27 at Leonard Hall Recreation Center in Leonardtown.

Registration can also be done online Nov. 1 to 27 at www.stmarysmd.com/recreate and registrants can also come by the main office in Leonardtown during this time period.

The cost is $55 per player, $500 for a team not needing shirts and $550 for a team needing shirts. Age division cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2012.

Tennis tournament

The St. Mary's County Tennis Association will be hold Feast or Slammin’, its third annual charity tennis tournament, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 17 at Great Mills High School.

The first 24 players from high school to adult to register wiill be able to participate in the tournament.

The cost is $20 plus one canned good. Proceeds will benefit the Southern Maryland Food Bank.

Prediction run/walk

The 16th annual Thanksgiving 5K Race and Prediction Run/Walk 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 17 at the visitor’s center in St. Mary’s City.

There will be a timed 5K race, a prediction 5K race and short course historic fun walk (1.5 miles).

Participants for the prediction 5K will be required to predict their finishing time at race day and will not be allowed to wear a watch.

The cost is $15 until Nov. 7 and $20 on race day. Registration will be held from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. on race day.

Proceeds benefit Special Olympics St. Mary’s County and all entry fees are tax deductible.

The first 120 paid entrants are guaranteed a custom-designed long sleeve T-shirt.

Futsal players wanted

The Calverton Futsal League is looking for players for its winter season, which will take place Saturdays and Sundays from December to February at The Calverton School in Huntingtown.

The cost is $70 per player until Nov. 19. After that date, there is a $20 late fee.

Baseball camp

St. Mary’s College of Maryland will host a six-week baseball camp starting Jan. 6 with St. Mary’s head baseball coach Lew Jenkins directing the program in conjunction with U.S. Baseball Academy.

Classes are available for players in grades 1 to 12 and are limited to six players per coach. Sessions are offered in advanced hitting, pitching, catching, fielding and baserunning.

The cost is as low as $99 for six weeks with proceeds to benefit amateur baseball in St. Mary’s City.
