Anacostia Watershed Society plants trees along Bladensburg, Hyattsville
The Anacostia Watershed Society planted trees across the river area in Bladensburg and Hyattsville on Nov. 3 and 10 in an effort to rebuild the natural habitat in the area and help to reduce pollution in the river from storm water.
Residents met at locations in Bladensburg and Hyattsville and were allowed to dig in the dirt and plant some young trees. The trees’ soil help to slow down the flow of water when it rains, helping to reduce the amount of pollution that reaches the river, said Julie Lawson, communications and campaigns manager for the society.
“These are very young small trees,” said Lawson. “It’s still dirty work but it is a wide range of people who come out.”
