The old site of the Maryland College of Art and Design between Wheaton and Forest Glen is now the official location of what will become the Carroll Knolls Local Park.

Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission bought the 2.47-acre property on the west side of Georgia Avenue for $1.1 million from the Montgomery College Foundation Inc.

The commission is also planning to send a letter to County Executive Isiah Leggett requesting that several undeveloped road rights-of-way be officially abandoned so that another acre can be added to the park, said Bill Gries, a land acquisition specialist for the commission’s park development division.

Securing the additional acre will require a process, including a public hearing, that is “routine but takes time,” Gries said.

Another small plot of land, about one-tenth of an acre, was donated by area property owner Albert H. Small and will be added to the park site, Gries said.

A building on the 2.47-acre parcel will be demolished, some asphalt will be pulled up, and grass will be planted among other measures to prepare the site for the park, he said.

After the demolition and other preparatory measures, the commission will create a temporary park, Gries said, while the project goes through a facility planning process, which will include community engagement.

The park could potentially include play equipment, a sports field and sitting and picnic areas, according to a commission release.
