Plans are underway in Rockville and elsewhere in Montgomery County for celebrations in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and event organizers are seeking award nominations.

Rockville’s Human Rights Commission is seeking nominees for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award and the F. Michael Taff Award.

The youth award honors a Rockville high school student who has helped advance the goals and dreams of King. The Taff award honors an individual, business or organization that has made a contribution to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

Nominations are due Dec. 5. Winners will be honored at a Jan. 21 celebration. For more information, visit www.rockvillemd.gov/events/MLKday.htm or call 240-314-8316.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Committee is seeking entries for a literary arts contest to honor King.

The writing contest is open to elementary, middle and high school students in Montgomery County. Poetry and essay entries of 150 words or less will be accepted on the theme “HIS dream ... Act ... WE change!”

Participating schools should each submit a maximum of three entries by Dec. 14. The top two winners will be invited to read their compositions at the county’s celebration Jan. 20.
