American Express has launched its Small Business Saturday campaign, encouraging people to shop at small businesses on Nov. 24. Likewise, the Olney Chamber of Commerce is encouraging shoppers to support its “I Buy Olney’ campaign, by patronizes local businesses during the holiday shopping season.
"The Olney community has long realized the economic value of supporting businesses here, and with so many great options available, why fight the crowds elsewhere?” said Chamber Executive Director Jon Hulsizer. “Besides, buying locally shows our gratitude for all the support businesses show to youth sports teams, fundraisers, school auctions, raffles, and more. Shopping locally this season is a perfect win-win for residents and businesses."
Hulsizer suggests a few gift ideas, all of which can be purchased locally: embroidered items, appliances, holiday greens and centerpieces, cell phones, jewelry, bird feeders, sunglasses, theater tickets, toys, clothing and wine.
He also suggests some unique ideas, such as a limousine ride to view holiday decorations, home organization, teeth whitening, pet grooming, or classes in fitness, acting, dancing or karate.
“If you can’t think of that perfect gift, consider purchasing a gift certificate from a wide variety of local restaurants or businesses,” he added.
