A Baltimore man was arrested Nov. 12 on charges including assault after he allegedly punched and dragged his girlfriend down the stairs and hit her 11-year-old granddaughter in the face.
Yohances T. Stern, 33, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count each of first-degree assault, arson threat and malicious destruction of property less than $500.
He is being held at the Calvert County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Nov. 11 to a 7th Street home in North Beach for a report of a physical altercation in progress, according to charging documents. Deputies were told by the Calvert County Control Center a child who was on the phone said people were fighting and one had grabbed a knife.
Deputies saw a man and woman in the entrance of the home tugging on different ends of a pile of clothes. The man, later identified as Stern, said he was “just trying to get his clothes and leave,” deputies said.
Stern told deputies a friend had dropped him off at the home and “everything was going fine” until the woman accused him of having sex with another man. The woman called Stern “gay in front of all the children” that were at the house, deputies said, so Stern said he went to gather his clothes and leave. The woman allegedly followed him around the house pulling on Stern’s arms and neck, charging documents state. Deputies said Stern had scratches on his chest and his shirt collar was ripped. Stern told deputies the woman had a knife at one point and was trying to cut his clothes with it.
The woman told deputies Stern had assaulted her and her granddaughter. She said she and Stern were arguing when “Stern started to turn things physical,” charging documents state. Stern allegedly punched the woman in the face and then dragged her down the stairs and pulled her hair, deputies said. Stern then allegedly started to strangle the woman, according to charging documents.
The woman said Stern was threatening to kill her during the incident. She said she started to feel dizzy when Stern then released her, and when her granddaughter ran downstairs with the phone, Stern hit the 11-year-old girl in the mouth and broke the phone, charging documents state. Stern then allegedly retrieved a large butcher knife from the kitchen and threatened to stab the woman and also threatened to “burn the house down after he killed her.”
The children allegedly told deputies they saw Stern punch the woman and pull her downstairs, heard Stern threaten to kill the woman and burn the house down and saw Stern grab a knife from the kitchen. They told deputies they saw Stern put the knife in a closet in the hallway, according to charging documents, and deputies found the knife there.
The woman had a scrape on her elbow and a cut on her arm, deputies said. The 11-year-old girl had “a fat lip,” deputies said.
