Calverton 68, Heritage Christian 61

Cole Rainier scored scored a team-high 17 points to carry the host Cougars (1-0 overall) to a season-opening win over Heritage Christian Academy of Prince George’s County on Friday.

Corey Darden scored 15 points and Zane Mass added 13. Josh Hubbard and Ray La Placa added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hubbard also added a team-high 14 rebounds.

The game see-sawed back and forth all night long as neither team was able to go ahead by more than seven points. Calverton finally made push in the final quarter to go ahead for good.

The Cougars will next host National Collegiate Academy of Washinghton County on Nov. 27.

Cross country

Carroll leads at Halloween Run

Drew Carroll finished in eighth place to lead all Calverton runners at the 100-Acre Halloween Run Oct. 27 at The Calverton School.

Carroll finished the race in 20 minutes 33 seconds, more than three minutes behind winner Alex Hadley (17:07). Hadley’s school is unknown.

Calverton’s Destiny Colon (22:28) and Catie Spaulding (22:34) placed 18th and 19th, respectively, and Roman Huntley was 27th in 25:42. Madison Hoffer finished 33rd (27:51), Sophia Amin was 36th (28:35) and Chloe Gertz clocked a 30:40 to finish 40th.

Other Cougars runners included Derek Windahl (43rd, 31:18), Jake Swierczek (45th, 31:34) and Will Scerbo (54th, 36:43).
