On the evening of Sunday, Nov. 4, my 98-year-old mother, Theresa Sanino, died peacefully in her sleep. Although I was not sitting next to her, I know she was surrounded by people who loved and cared for her — the staff of the west wing of the Calvert Nursing Center. My mother had been a resident of the nursing center for approximately five years and, in that time, grew to love the staff as family members. She was at home there and felt truly loved. That in itself is a blessing not only for an old woman, but maybe more importantly for me, her only surviving child.

As I go forward without the strong woman who taught me so much about life, I will always be indebted to the caretakers who helped me and, especially, her. I know her life was full and happy even to the end. Thank you to the many employees who gave unselfishly of themselves for my mother. There will always be a special place in my heart for you.
