With the first tournament of the Sunday Youth Basketball League’s 2012-13 campaign in the books, the regular season started with a bang last weekend with action Saturday and Sunday.
Cardinal Hickey Academy, Father Andrew White School and St. Mary’s Bryantown School each enjoyed victories on the boys and girls sides.
Cardinal Hickey’s boys rallied back in the fourth quarter Sunday for a 32-27 victory over Our Lady Star of the Sea School.
Cardinal Hickey led 17-13 at halftime, but saw Our Lady take a 23-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Cardinal Hickey hit some key free throws down the stretch to pick up the win.
Nine different players scored for Cardinal Hickey (1-1 overall) in the contest. Frank McGarvey led with eight points, while Jack Degrange had seven.
Brendan Dziekiewicz led Our Lady (1-2) with eight points, while Brian Quinn had seven.
Cardinal Hickey’s girls team pulled away in the fourth quarter en route to a 25-18 victory over Our Lady on Sunday.
Cardinal Hickey led 12-5 at halftime, then Our Lady got to within 16-13 entering the fourth quarter. Cardinal Hickey answered back in the fourth to get the win.
Marissa Laidley led Cardinal Hickey (2-1) with 15 points. Erin Balderson led Our Lady (2-2) with eight points.
Father Andrew White’s boys shut out St. John’s School in two of four quarters on Sunday en route a 31-9 victory on Sunday.
Father Andrew White led 12-2 at halftime after shutting out St. John’s 5-0 in the first quarter. Father Andrew White shut out St. John’s 11-0 in the fourth.
Jordan Jones led Father Andrew White (2-1) with 13 points, while Joseph Tennyson had five. Nolan Repasi led St. John’s (0-2) with six points.
On the girls side, Father Andrew White stormed out to an early lead and never looked back in a 41-10 victory over St. John’s on Sunday.

Saturday, St. Mary’s Bryantown’s boys picked up a 36-20 victory over Mother Catherine Spalding School.
St. Mary’s Bryantown led 17-11 at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Mother Catherine 12-4 in the period.
Derrick Carter led St. Mary’s Bryantown (2-1) with 15 points, while Charlie Heinze had seven. Brad Hoover and Matthew Sharkey each contributed six points.
Brandon Lowe led Mother Catherine (0-2) with nine points, while Michael Sullivan had seven.
St. Mary’s Bryantown’s girls got out to an early lead and never looked back in a 24-14 victory over Mother Catherine on Saturday.
St. Mary’s Bryantown led 8-1 after the first quarter and 14-5 at halftime.
Emma Thompson led St. Mary’s Bryantown (1-1) with 14 points. Jennah Hutson led Mother Catherine (2-2) with 10 points.
