A homeless man who had been living in the Hughesville area was found dead last week on the Three Notch Trail in Charlotte Hall, according to St. Mary’s detectives who report that their investigation has found no evidence of foul play in the man’s death.

A bicyclist discovered the body of 58-year-old Stanley Wayne Cole on the trail shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, according to investigators, and the body was transported from the scene to the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy. An employee at the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that a ruling on the cause and manner of Cole’s death is awaiting the results of toxicology tests on his blood.

Cole had “a history of health issues,” a detective said this week, adding that Cole had no family members in the area. A relative told police that Cole most recently had been living in the basement of a house in Hughesville.

“You’d see him riding his bike around up there,” the detective said, noting that nighttime temperatures early last week were above freezing. “We don’t believe that weather was a factor,” the investigator said, in Cole’s death.
