Tax volunteers needed
The AARP Tax-Aide program sponsored by the Calvert County Office on Aging is seeking volunteers to serve as tax counselors to prepare, review and e-file 2012 tax returns at each of the three senior centers in 2013. Volunteers can give a few hours a week or more. All Tax-Aide volunteers will be required to pass the IRS and Maryland certification tests. Training will be offered in late 2012 and/or early 2013. For more information, contact the Office on Aging at 410-535-4606 or 301-855-1170.
Important benefit changes coming
On March 1, 2013, the U.S. government will stop mailing paper checks for recurring Social Security, veteran and federal retiree pension payments. The U.S. Department of the Treasury is requiring federal benefit recipients to receive money electronically. Choose to get payments by direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to a Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® account. It’s convenient — once enrolled, participants do not have to go to the bank to deposit checks. It’s safe — it protects against lost or stolen checks. It’s smart — it is faster access to money. There are several ways to sign up. Talk to the bank, credit union or savings and loan, go to Godirect.org, or call the Social Security Office in Charlotte Hall at 1-888-866-5181.
