Darnall’s Chance hosts annual gingerbread contest

Darnall’s Chance House Museum in Upper Marlboro opened its annual Gingerbread House Contest and Show Nov. 23, showcasing Prince George’s County residents’ artistic and baking skills.

The event, in its 13th year, will be open at the museum, located at 14800 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, from noon until 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, ending Dec. 9. Admission is $1 for children 5 years old and older, and free for those younger than 4 years old.

Attendees will be able to see contestants’ various edible home creations and vote for their favorites in the adult and child categories. The contestant in each category with the most votes will receive $350.

Susan Reidy, museum director at Darnall’s Chance, said the event is perfect for “putting yourself in a holiday mood.”

“You’ll see things that you never thought could be made with edible food,” Reidy said. “And voting is not an easy decision. There’s something magical about each and every one of the creations.”
