La Plata is celebrating the most wonderful time of the year — Andy Williams’ style — with an Old Tyme Holiday Gathering and Breakfast with Santa planned for the next two weeks at town hall.

The town will hold its Old Tyme Holiday Gathering from 3 to 6 p.m. Dec. 2 and feature live holiday music, children’s activities and a visit from Santa Claus.

John the Fifer will perform from 3:15 to 3:55 p.m., followed by the Southern Mix Barbershop Chorus from 4:10 to 4:45 p.m. and the La Plata High School Vocal Department’s Holiday Sing-Along from 5 to 5:45 p.m.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sing holiday songs with the La Plata High School vocal department. Lyric sheets will be provided, special events coordinator Colleen Wilson said.

Children will be able to make crafts and get their faces painted throughout the event. Story time will be at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. for 25 minutes. Children should watch out for Santa’s arrival during the later part of the holiday gathering.

Light refreshments will also be available.

Breakfast with Santa will be Dec. 8 in four time slots: 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. for 45 minutes each.

The time slots are full, Wilson said, but people can sign up on a waiting list by calling the town hall at 301-934-8421.

As part of the event, the town is asking each child to bring a holiday card for nursing home residents or a nonperishable food item for the Sacred Heart Church food bank.

The town also will have a holiday lights contest Dec. 10. No registration is required, but participants need to have their lights on by 5 that evening. La Plata Beautification Commission members will judge the contest, said Councilwoman Paddy Mudd. Mudd serves on the commission as an ex-officio member.
