The Upper Marlboro Young Marines chapter will travel to Hawaii to participate in the 71st anniversary Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration, which will include the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the USS Arizona memorial site and the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Upper Marlboro chapter is one of two chapters in Maryland representing the Young Marines coming from 11 different states. The other Maryland chapter is in Hamilton.

The Young Marines will perform a wreath-laying ceremony today at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. On Friday, the Young Marines members will lead the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu, according to a statement.

“When the opportunity to travel to Hawaii arose, the members of the Young Marines started moving mountains in their fundraising efforts,” said Michael Kessler, national executive director of the Young Marines in a statement. “The result is a testament to the dedication of these young people.”

The Young Marines is an education and service program for area youth ages 8 and up that focuses on character building, leadership and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, according to the statement.
