A Laurel man is dead after he was struck by a passing car along the Baltimore Washington Parkway in the Linthicum Heights area early Saturday.
Henry Smith, 71, was killed as he apparently walked in or near the northbound lanes of the BW Parkway near Interstate 695, according to Maryland State Police, who now are investigating the hit-and-run.
State police still are investigating the case and trying to determine why Smith had been walking on the road, said Sgt. E. White, a state police spokesman from the Glen Burnie barracks.
The driver of a light blue Toyota that struck Smith left the scene after the collision, state police said. According to state police, officers received a call at about 3 a.m. for the report of a man walking in the northbound lanes of Interstate 295. Upon arrival, state troopers found Smith’s body lying in a lane on I-295.
Maryland State Police believe the striking car has a left headlight out and a dragging front bumper. The car was traveling north on I-295 and possibly exited I-295 onto Waterview Avenue in the Westport area of Baltimore.
Police are asking anyone with information on the driver of the vehicle to call the Glen Burnie barracks at 410-761-5130. Caller identities may remain confidential.
A phone number for Smith’s residence could not be located.
