Police investigate rash of tire slashings in Laurel -- Gazette.Net

Laurel police are reviewing surveillance footage after tires were slashed on 17 vehicles Friday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., police were called to the Sportsman’s Pub at 116 Washington Blvd. for the report of vandalism and found five vehicles that each had one or multiple tires slashed, according to city officials.

While responding to the first report, officers were made aware of other incidents at AMF Laurel Lanes at 15013 Baltimore Ave. and Laurel Station Bar & Grill at 14933 Baltimore Ave., said city spokesman Pete Piringer, noting that one vehicle was found to have slashed tires at Laurel Lanes while 11 were discovered at Laurel Station.

While investigating, police identified a “person of interest” and took him in for questioning, but he was ultimately arrested on unrelated charges from an outstanding warrant, Piringer said. He said the man’s identity has not been released.

“The investigation is still open and active,” Piringer said. “We do believe they are all related ... . This had a pretty significant impact on the patrons and employees of all of these establishments.”

Piringer said residents should take general safety measures when driving and parking their vehicles.

“Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you,” Piringer said. “Park in high-visibility areas and check for lighting, especially when it’s dark, which was the case for all these people.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the tire slashings to contact the police department at 301-725-3000 or use the department’s confidential tip line at 301-498-7645.
