Lenard Andrew Peterson, 69, Spring Creek, Va.
Lenard Andrew “Len” “Lennie” Peterson, 69, of Spring Creek, Va. died of colon cancer Dec. 2, 2012, at home near Charlottesville, Va.
He was born Dec. 11, 1943, in Washington, D.C. and lived most of his life in Charles County.
He was under hospice care and the care of his wife, Margie.
Mr. Peterson retired from the Department of the Navy, having worked at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C., for 37 years. He especially enjoyed his last 10 years at NRL, travelling worldwide with the Space Systems Development Department. He attended Lackey High School and was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Bryans Road.
He loved life and participated in many activities, including duckpin bowling at Indian Head Bowling Alley and Curley’s, Waldorf; baseball in the Charles-St. Mary’s League; repairing and building anything and everything; cheering on the Washington Nationals with his grandson; and especially golfing with his great buddies at Hawthorne Country Club.
He was an outgoing, joyful person who immediately became “best buds” with almost everyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Peterson; an uncle and aunt who helped raise him, Andrew and Evelyn Peterson; and numerous other aunts and cousins.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Margaret Peterson; brother, Thomas Peterson and his wife Lori of York, Pa.; son, Jeff Garner and his wife Jennifer of Woodbridge, Va.; daughter, Elizabeth Wertheim and her husband Michael of Charlottesville; and grandchildren, Hunter and Anna Brooks Wertheim.
A memorial service was held Dec. 6 at Grace Lutheran Church, La Plata. His ashes will be spread at some of his favorite places.
