In observance of the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, American Legion Post 68 will conduct its annual American Flag retirement ceremony at the Brookeville Academy on Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.

Boy Scout Troop 264, which the Legion has sponsored since 1927, will also participate in the ceremony.

Post 68 Commander Halsey Smith said the tradition dates back nearly 40 years. The ceremony has been held at various locations, but for the past several years has taken place on the grounds of the Brookeville Academy, located at 5 High St. in Brookeville.

Worn and faded flags can be dropped off at Fletcher’s Service Station, located at 18001 Georgia Ave. in Olney. Legion members will pick them up prior to the ceremony, at which they will be properly disposed of.
