The Southeast Rural Olney Civic Association recently was recently honored with a Historic Preservation Award from Montgomery Preservation Inc.
The Historic Preservation Awards honor individuals and groups who, through personal or community action and efforts, have made significant contributions to the preservation of Montgomery County's historic resources and landscapes.
SEROCA, along with past president David Reile and his wife, Barbara Suddarth, were recognized for their efforts in preventing the Streams of Hope Church from building a large house of worship on Emory Church Road in Olney.
SEROCA and other community organizations opposed the project because it did not adhere to the Olney master plan, was too large for the rural dead-end street and would have had detrimental effects on the environment.
“The Montgomery Preservation board believes that SEROCA demonstrates the ideals that he fought for and Montgomery Preservation Inc. is working toward,” wrote Executive Director Judy Christensen in an email to Reile.
