A PTA bake sale at Lucy Barnsley Elementary School netted some big dough for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

An Election Day bake sale fundraiser originally was planned to raise funds for the Rockville school’s PTA but after stories about the needs of the hurricane victims emerged, the PTA decided to raise money for The American Red Cross, said Lois Schreiber, a teacher at the school.

Barnsley families and local businesses such as Safeway and Caribou Coffee donated the tempting goodies. The PTA asked for voluntary contributions from those who had come to the school to vote and in exchange, people could help themselves to all the goodies they wanted.

The PTA proceeds totaled $1,620. Barnsley's PTA sent a check to The American Red Cross, earmarked for the Disaster Relief Fund for Hurricane Sandy.

“A huge thanks goes to Margie Marple [Barnsely’s PTA exectuive vice president] and the families of Lucy Barnsley who donated their time and all of the baked goods, coffee, and even healthy snacks, to make this day so successful,” Schreiber said.
