A 17-year-old Magruder High School senior was arrested Thursday after police found a handgun in his backpack on school grounds.
Montgomery County Police arrested Octavio Antonio Estevez of the 700 block of 62nd Avenue SE, Washington, DC. about 8 a.m. Estevez is being charged as an adult with possession of a weapon on school property and other weapon-related charges, according to a county police release.
Estevez was “not supposed to be at school” Thursday, but entered the school building at 5939 Muncaster Mill Road in Rockville anyway, said Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman Dana Tofig. Tofig would not say why Estevez was not supposed to be there.
When a school resource officer ordered Estevez to leave, the teen refused and was arrested for trespassing, according to police.
During a search of his backpack, police said they found an unloaded .22 caliber H&R handgun. There was no ammunition recovered with the weapon, according to police. The Montgomery County Police Firearms Unit was still testing whether the gun was operable.
“It was an old gun, not necessarily in the best shape,” said police spokeswoman Janelle Smith.
Tofig said the incident did not cause any issues at the school Thursday. He did say MCPS has a Montgomery County address for the teen.
