An overturned tractor trailer slowed morning traffic on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway near Interstate 270 early Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for Maryland State Police, Sgt. Vinson Smith, said state police were called to the scene on 495 between Connecticut Avenue and I-270 at 1:56 a.m. The truck, filled with pineapples, blueberries and kiwis, was on the shoulder when police arrived. Smith said there were no injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer was Jorge O. Reyes, 47, of Suwanee, Ga. Reyes told troopers that “he took the turn too fast,” and flipped the truck, Smith said.

Reyes has been cited for the incident, he said.

According to Eric Lewis, a driver for Morton’s Towing & Recovery in Rockville, 70,000 pounds of fruit need to be taken out of the truck. Workers will then use two 50-ton tow trucks to right the tractor trailer, he said.

The far right lane is still closed, and Smith estimates it will take several hours before the truck is moved.
