Mary “Eleanor” Rowell, 87, formerly of Canton, N.Y., died Nov. 25, 2012, at Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway.

She is survived by her sons, Anthony and wife, Carla Rowell, of Piney Point and Thomas Rowell of Montrose, N.Y.; daughters, Linda Reuss of Crewe, Va., and Rachael Hadeler of Parkridge, N.J.; a brother, Harold Lowery of DeKalb Junction, N.Y.; sisters, Ursula Coffey of Hermon, N.Y., Eileen Derushia of Raymondville, N.Y., and Kathleen Goria of Nyack, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Maggie. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Rowell; and brothers, John, Patrick and Leo Hand.

Born March 31, 1925, in Depeyster, N.Y., she was the daughter of John and Katherine McHugh Hand.

She graduated from DeKalb School and married Mervin K. “Bud” Rowell. She worked as a clerk at Letchworth Village and was an operator for New York Telephone. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and St. Henry’s Church and was a eucharistic minister. She was passionate about politics and enjoyed music, watching movies and the news.

Arrangements were handled by Allen-Denesha Funeral Home in DeKalb Junction, where the family received friends Nov. 30. A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 1 at St. Mary’s Church in Canton, N.Y., with the Rev. Doug Lucia officiating. Interment followed at St. Henry’s Cemetery.
