Brown named to MS hall of fame

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s National Capital chapter recognized supporters and volunteers, including National Volunteer Hall of Fame inductee Yvonne Brown, at its 2012 holiday celebration and awards on Dec. 13 at the Renaissance Dupont Circle Hotel.
The event will bring together volunteers, clients, fundraisers, board members, sponsors and community partners as the National Capital chapter celebrates its accomplishments and looks forward to the upcoming year.
A Charles County resident, Brown first came to the National MS Society for a support group for those newly diagnosed with the disease after her diagnosis prompted a string of obstacles in her life, including unemployment and homelessness.
Soon after her introduction, Brown became involved with the Friendly Visitor’s Program. Through the program, Brown met a woman named Jackie, who lived in a nursing home and introduced her to possibility that Brown could act as a voice for those who could not attend advocacy events.
Brown has served as an advocate for MS and disability rights for eight years.
She played a significant role in the Social Security Administration’s Compassionate Allowances Outreach Hearing on Autoimmune Diseases and worked to develop relationships with local and national governments.
Brown received her award last month from National MS Society CEO Cindy Zagieboylo and National Board chairman Tom Kuhn in Dallas at the National MS Society’s National Conference.
