Nearly two dozen Frederick County athletes took home prizes at the 2012 Special Olympics Maryland 10 Pin Bowling State Championships, held Dec. 2 in Gaithersburg.

Three hundred athletes in the state qualified in regional tournaments, held in November, to make it to the state championships. Athletes participated in singles, doubles and unified doubles competition.

The following residents won prizes in the unified doubles competition:

Lesedi D'Andrea Penna, 22, and her unified doubles partner, Vickie Rae D'Andrea-Penna, 55, both of Brunswick, won first place.

The following people won prizes in singles competition:

Adamstown: Timothy Castillo, 16, first place

Frederick: Gerald Fly, 64, second place; Stan Frederick, 45, fifth place; Samantha Gibbons, 14, fourth place; Robert Leuthold, 41, first place; Gary Lewis, 52, second place; Travis McMakin, 16, fourth place; Joel Zack Reeves, 42, third place; Wesley Rippeon, 65, first place; Nathaniel Rivera, 26, sixth place; James Schattenberg, 49, fourth place; David Smith, 46, fifth place; Alarik Vickers, 24, third place; and Ricky Walter, 66, fourth place

Middletown: Justin Hickey, 13, first place

New Market: John “Hunter” Bernbaum, 14, fourth place

Thurmont: Taylor Kime, 23, fifth place

Walkersville: Kelly Anderson, 31, fifth place
