Southern Prince George’s residents will have the chance to meet a Civil War-era Santa Claus on Saturday during a historic tour of the Surratt House Museum in Clinton.

Susan Proctor, the museum’s education coordinator, said the house will be decorated as a civil war-era middle class family might decorate during the winter months with greenery and berries that they might find outside and bring into the home.

The highlight of the tour will feature Civil War historian Kevin Rawlings dressed as Civil War Santa, which Proctor said was a man who once dressed as Santa Claus during the Civil War to visit with citizens and boost morale during the time period.

“[Rawlings] has been doing this for many years. You look at him and think Santa Claus,” Proctor said. “It’s an event for children of all ages and you’ll be learning about the history of how Santa came to be.”

Hot apple cider and homemade cookies will also be provided, Proctor said.
