A 2-year-old boy and his father were shot Wednesday morning in Seat Pleasant, killing the man, according to Prince George’s County police.
Authorities said Seat Pleasant police received a call for a shooting in the 6800 block of Seat Pleasant Drive around 10 a.m. County homicide detectives responded to the Pleasant House Apartments to investigate and found that a man was holding the boy just outside an apartment unit when two armed gunmen “fired several shots” at them and left the scene in a black BMW sedan, police said.
The father has been identified as Nicoh Mayhew, 25, of the 6800 block of Seat Pleasant.
Pleasant House Apartments is located in Capitol Heights, though police said the particular apartment where the shooting took place was within the Seat Pleasant city limits.
“We know it was not a random act of violence,” said Julie Parker, a county police spokeswoman, who noted that police are still trying to determine a motive.
She said the 2-year-old boy is expected to live and is currently receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators are now talking to witnesses and “scouring surveillance footage” that might have captured what took place at the scene.
Calls to Pleasant House Apartments management were not returned Thursday.
Parker said anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS to be offered an up to $25,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and indictment of a suspect.
This marks Prince George’s County’s 61st homicide so far this year.
