James E. Rohme, 34, of Leonardtown remained in St. Mary’s jail in lieu of $5,000 bond after a court hearing Monday on a charge of carrying out a scheme to steal three 55-inch Vizio televisions during two visits last weekend to the Walmart store in California.

Police found Rohme being detained at the store on Sunday by a security employee as the suspect pushed a shopping cart loaded with one of the televisions toward the front entrance, according to a statement of probable cause filed by St. Mary’s sheriff’s Cpl. Brian Connelly. Earlier that evening, charging papers allege, a door greeter stopped Rohme from leaving the grocery area entrance of the store as he pushed another television past the registers, with its security tag still attached.

“The defendant was in the store the previous evening,” on Saturday, charging papers allege, “and had made it out of the store with another of the same televisions, without being stopped.”

The televisions each were valued at $898, according to charging papers.
