Rose Essex, a certified diabetes educator at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, recently received the 2012 Outstanding Nurse Educator Award from the Maryland Nurses Association.
The award is presented to an MNA member who has demonstrated excellence in nursing education and continuing education for patients, and has provided others with exceptional educational opportunities.
Essex, an Accokeek resident, has worked in health care for 40 years. For the past 11 years, she has served as a diabetes educator at Calvert Memorial, evaluating and assessing individual diabetic patients and teaching them skills for self-management.
She has been instrumental in developing a comprehensive diabetes education program at the hospital.
Over the last year, she has been involved in improving outcomes of patients by implementing initiatives designed to improve the lives of diabetic patients.
Essex was first awarded District 9ís 2012 Grace E. Brown Educator Award during National Nurses Week for outstanding clinical competence, compassionate care, active membership in health-related organizations and participation in continuing education programs.
This is the second time she has been recognized by District 9ís Maryland Nurses Association. She was named Nurse of the Year in 2006.
The district includes Calvert, Charles and St. Maryís counties.
