Montgomery County police were alerted to an armed robbery at a Gaithersburg Pizza Hut on Wednesday after a female customer called the store during the crime.

“When the call was answered by a Pizza Hut employee, she was told the store was being robbed and she heard someone demanding cash in the background,” said Lucille Baur, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman. “She immediately hung up and called the police.”

The robbery took place at 1:43 p.m. in the 300 block of Muddy Branch Road in the Festival Shopping Center, Baur said. Baur also confirmed that an unknown male entered the restaurant and threatened employees with a handgun and that there were no bystanders in the store at the time of the robbery.

“I can confirm that the suspect was armed with a gun and that he did obtain an undisclosed amount of cash,” Baur said. “He was last seen fleeing the store on foot and no one was injured during the robbery.”

The robber was described as a hispanic man in his 20s standing about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a cap, knee-length coat and a scarf which he used to cover part his face, Baur said.

Gaithersburg city police also responded to the call but county police are leading the investigation, Baur said.
