A third person is now dead as a result of a Christmas Eve multi-vehicle accident on the outer loop of the Beltway.
Two Silver Spring residents were killed in the Dec. 24 accident, including a 17-year-old boy.
Police are still investigating the accident that involved three vehicles at about 7:40 p.m. Dec. 24 and have not released the names of those killed. A 72-year-old woman who was hospitalized after the crash died of her injuries on Christmas Day. Two more people, a 17-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at a local hospital on the night of the crash.
According to police, a 36-year-old Silver Spring woman who was driving a Chevrolet Malibu collided with two other cars when she lost control and the car started hydroplaning on the outer loop of the Beltway before Connecticut Avenue. The driver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, according to Maryland State Police.
The Malibu struck a second car, a Toyota pickup truck, when the Malibu crossed into its lane, police said. The Malibu spun onto the shoulder but returned to the roadway, where it was hit by a third car, a Chevrolet Silverado, according to the police report.
The driver of the Malibu was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where she was treated and released. All four of the carís passengers were taken to local hospitals. Two passengers were taken to Suburban Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said. Two other passengers were taken to Inova Hospital in Fairfax, where one died. The condition of the last passenger is not currently known. All of the Malibuís passengers were from Silver Spring, according to a spokesman for the Rockville Barrack of Maryland State Police.
One passenger in the Toyota pickup was transported to Holy Cross Hospital with minor injuries, according to the police report. The driver of the Toyota is from Gaithersburg. The truckís two passengers are from Silver Spring.
The driver and sole occupant of the Silverado is an Edgewater resident. That driver sustained minor injuries, police said.
