Turnovers help Frederick slip past Suitland -- Gazette.Net

Not much separated the Frederick and Suitland high school girls basketball teams during 2012 IAABO Christmas tournament consolation play Friday afternoon at Prince George's Community College.

Well, that is except for too many costly turnovers committed by the Rams, leading to a 54-49 Frederick victory.

In the first of four tournament games played Friday, the two squads found themselves separated by no more than six points throughout the contest, they produced 10 lead changes and forged a tie on eight separate occasions.

The Cadets (5-1) pulled out the victory, however, as five late turnovers and 27 miscues for the game led to 28 points off turnovers to send the Rams to their fourth straight loss following a 5-0 start to the 2012-13 campaign.

“We made a lot of mistakes; definitely mistakes I haven't seen us make all season,” Rams coach Keith Lynch said. “But this is a great experience. This is the first time Suitland has ever been in the IAABO tournament, so that was good. We learned a lot. I think this is going to make us better for our season.”

Frederick's Courtney Davis, who produced a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds, gave the Cadets the lead for good at 49-47 with 3 minutes remaining in the game. She then pushed that advantage to 51-47 with 1:56 left on two free throws following an attempted stickback. Cristina Negoescu added a driving layup for a six-point advantage not long later.

“It seemed like they'd go up by one or two and then we would come back and tie it and then go up,” said Frederick coach Keivette Hammond, whose squad had its first round game cancelled because of Wednesday's snow and then lost, 73-37, to Charles H. Flowers (7-1) Thursday. “It was a back-and-forth game and a good test for us. It seemed like we were able to finish a lot better today.”

Suitland went scoreless from the 3:10-mark to well under a minute to play, largely through turnovers and errant shots (21-for-55 for the game or 38.2 percent). Taleah Williams (14 points, 16 rebounds) recorded that lone basket in the final 3-plus minutes on a rebound stickback.

“The turnovers did hurt us a little; we've just got to pick up our intensity,” said Suitland guard Renee Kydd, who led the Rams with 15 points. “We learned what we've got to do. This tournament helped us for … the rest of the season.”

Suitland opened tournament play with a 55-39 loss to West Springfield (Va.) Wednesday and followed with a 53-49 setback to Friendly Thursday.
