The Calvert Library Prince Frederick will host a motivating and triumphant film about the power of the human spirit, based on Dan Millman’s bestseller “Way of the Peaceful Warrior,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2. A gifted young athlete, bound for Olympic gold, has it all. But after a tragic accident, he comes to rely on a mysterious stranger, and an elusive young woman, to teach him the secret to overcoming incredible odds and tap into new worlds of strength and understanding. The Southern Maryland Audubon Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Nature Center on Grays Road in Prince Frederick. The speaker will be David Curson, director of Bird Conservation for Audubon MD-DC. His topic will be “Bird Conservation at Southern Maryland’s IBAs (important bird areas): An Update.” Southern Maryland is home to seven of these areas, supporting rare and declining species.

Calvert Memorial Hospital will host a Lunch & Learn at noon Thursday, Jan. 3, in classroom 1. Join Calvert Memorial’s new pulmonologist, Dr. Riffat Meraj, who will discuss “Coping with COPD” (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). While COPD cannot be cured, it can be successfully managed. The Davidsonville Dance Club will offer lessons in the quickstep, basic 1, and samba, basic 1, for eight weeks beginning Friday, Jan. 4. Quickstep lessons start at 7 p.m., and samba begins at 8 p.m., international style. Lessons will be taught by a professional instructor, and no partner is required. The breakfast allows chamber members to hear from its state delegation about bills and legislation to be presented during the 2013 legislative session in Annapolis.
