Our community helped their library keep our children reading last summer.
The St. Mary’s County Library Board and staff want to thank the many businesses and volunteers who helped to make this another record-breaking summer at your libraries: the summer programs were attended by more than 14,500 children and adults and more than 4,250 children participated in the three reading programs.
This success would not have been possible without our many sponsors. Thanks to the following for their generous support: board of library trustees, Checker’s, Chick-fil-A, Friends of St. Mary’s County Library, Ledo’s Pizza in Lexington Park, Rita’s Italian Water Ice, SMECO, St. Mary’s County Arts Council, Target, Baltimore Orioles, Maryland Science Center, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team and Southern Maryland Regional Library. We also thank St. Clement’s Island Museum for providing an informative program about our local history; and White Marsh Elementary School, Bay District Fire Department, Leonard Hall Recreation Center and Leonardtown Elementary School for allowing us to use their facilities for the special performances. And, of course, thanks to The Enterprise for their continuing coverage which helped us attract our record-breaking crowds,
A very special thank you goes to the 126 dedicated teen volunteers who worked a total of 2,189 hours assisting with the summer reading programs. We could not have provided the many activities without these young volunteers.
We also want to thank the many families who brought food donations when they attended the programs. A total of 276 pounds of food was brought to the three libraries, which were donated to the Southern Maryland Food Bank. Due to the increasing need in our community, our staff will continue to collect food during the year.
Last, and most importantly, we applaud the many parents and caregivers who brought their children to the library over the summer … we depend upon you to reach your children. Thank you for your support and for your cooperation.
