Rose Essex, certified diabetes educator at Calvert Memorial Hospital, recently received the 2012 Outstanding Nurse Educator Award from the Maryland Nurses Association. The award is presented to a MNA member who has demonstrated excellence in nursing education and continuing education for patients and has provided others with exceptional educational opportunities, a press release states.
Essex, of Accokeek, has worked in the health care industry for 40 years, the release states. For the past 11 years, she has served as a diabetes educator at CMH, evaluating and assessing individual diabetic patients and teaching them skills for self-management. She has been instrumental in developing a comprehensive Diabetes Education Program for Calvert Memorial Hospital. Over the last year, she has been involved in improving outcomes of patients by implementing various initiatives, all designed to improve the lives of diabetic patients.
Essex was first awarded District 9ís (Calvert, Charles and St. Maryís counties) 2012 Grace E. Brown Educator Award during National Nurses Week for outstanding clinical competence, compassionate care, active membership in health-related organizations and participation in continuing education programs, according to the release. This is the second time she has been recognized by District 9ís Maryland Nurses Association; she was named Nurse of the Year in 2006.
