The Calvert boys soccer team was presented with an unexpected award during its team banquet held Nov. 27 at Calvert High School.
Capital Area Soccer Referee Association president Rey Quiroz and referee assignor Marjorie Watson presented the team with the 2012 James Humphrey Sports Award.
The award is distributed “for outstanding display of sportsmanship, fair play, respect and professionalism to our referee officials,” Quiroz said the decision to award the Cavaliers, who were 3-10-2 (3-7-2 SMAC) in head coach Doug Jones’ first season, was unanimous.
“This past season we worked very hard as a team to replace that reputation with a solid and consistent display of good sportsmanship on and off the pitch,” Jones said. “Words can't describe how proud I am of my players and coaching staff, and my appreciation for the consistent and continued outstanding support from the Calvert High School administration. Time and time again I praised my players. The receipt of this award sustained my praise and couldn't have come at a better time. Win or lose, good sportsmanship defines the person and reflects heavily on the program, administration and sport of soccer. I am thankful that the Capital Area Soccer Referees Association has this very beneficial and meaningful award and administrators that care enough about the game and players to personally present it.”
