St. Mary’s detectives reported this week that a shooting Friday evening that injured a teenager in a community near Great Mills was the result of a self-inflicted mishap.

The 15-year-old boy arrived at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown with a gunshot wound in his leg, according to law officers, and they responded there to take an initial report on the attack. The teenager was treated at the hospital for his injury, which was not life threatening, detectives report.

Police initially were told that the boy and two other male teenagers were walking in the West Westbury neighborhood at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, when a small passenger vehicle drove by and gunshots were fired from the vehicle toward the teenagers. Detectives reported Monday that their investigation determined that the boy accidentally shot himself while holding a firearm, and that the matter now has been referred to county prosecutors and juvenile services authorities.
