Calling all dancers — A contra dance sponsored by Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance, featuring caller Sargon deJesus, will be held Jan. 12 at Christ Episcopal Church parish hall, 37497 Zach Fowler Road, Chaptico. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the dancing begins at 7:30. Beginners are encouraged to arrive at 7 to get some instruction in the various dances. Work on display — The art center in Prince Frederick is showing original work by local artists Suzanne Shelden, Lonnie Harkins, Monica Richards, Faith Gaillot, Michelle Steiger, Gee Freedman and Mark Hayes. Art for the animals — ArtWorks7th will hold a fundraiser this month for the Calvert Animal Welfare League. Multimedia exhibit — Charles County Arts Alliance continues its presentation of Charles County artists with a multimedia exhibit in its newly opened Waldorf West Gallery. Fundraiser — Area bands will perform at a benefit for Adam Lumpkins, a 5-year-old battling leukemia, noon-8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Mechanicsville Moose Lodge, Mechanicsville. Bands will include No Green Jelly Beenz, R&R Train, Franklin Square Band, Justin Crenshaw, Groove Span and Road House. Tickets are $10 per person, free for children 12 and younger. ‘Bright’ lights — Port Tobacco Players will hold a fundraiser for United Way of Charles County with their production of “Brighton Beach Memoirs.” PTP will donate $1 of each ticket sold to the United Way. Production runs from Jan. 25-Feb. 10. Tickets are adults, $17; seniors 60 and older, youth through high school and military with ID, $14.
