Joseph Augustus Thomas Sr., 76, La Plata
Joseph Augustus “Joe” Thomas Sr., 76, of La Plata died Jan. 16, 2013, at Genesis HealthCare, La Plata Center.
Born Aug. 7, 1936, in Pomfret, he was the son of the late Earl Thomas Sr. and the late Elizabeth Dyer Thomas.
Mr. Thomas worked his entire life as an auto mechanic with Reed McDonough, Barnes Chevrolet, Atlas Pontiac and Ken Dixon car dealerships. He was married July 14, 1961, to Martha Bivins. He was a great baseball player and enjoyed watching his two sons play for the Pisgah BooBoos.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha “Honey Bun” Thomas; and brother, Earl Thomas Jr.
He is survived by his children, Jolita Moton, Joseph Jr. and his wife Diane Thomas and Dewayne and his wife Renee Thomas; brother, Walter Thomas; grandchildren, JoKisha and Melvin; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Pomfret. The Rev. Mark Smith will officiate. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.
