Editor’s Note: This Athlete diary was submitted before Huntingtown’s contest versus McDonough on Wednesday evening. Huntingtown lost the contest, 49-45.
I realized this past weekend that half of my senior year and basketball season is over.
We are in the third marking period of the school year. The season is going by so fast. It’s very scary.
We have taken advantage of gym time, but also time off the court to bond as a team.
Last Wednesday, we played Westlake. The first half we played some our best basketball of the season so far. Our defense was solid. We were communicating and not allowing easy buckets. We were also more patient on offense which helped with us getting to the free-throw line more. The score was 16-18 Westlake at halftime.
The second half, Westlake came out applying man-to-man pressure and we had several mental mistakes and turnovers which resulted in Westlake pulling away with the win.
We are still working through trying to find that right combination of players. Our team is very young this year. We are full of talent, but we don’t always show it on the court.
Friday before our Martin Luther King holiday break, we hosted Northern. We started off slow turning the ball over and not communicating on defense. We were fighting to get back into the second half with a deficit score of 6-24. The second half, we pulled it together defensively. The fight from the first half of the Westlake game was back. We started playing together as a team, driving to the basket and communicating on defense. In the end, we were defeated, but our pride wasn’t.
In practice, our focus this week has been working on being mentally tough and maintaining the mental toughness throughout practices and games. We are still very determined to get that first win of the season.
Oh, how that would boost our morale. We are so close I can almost grab it, taste it and feel it.
We have one home game this week against McDonough then we are back on the road against Patuxent.
