All five of the St. Mary’s County commissioners agreed Tuesday to buy land for FDR Boulevard in California as part of the project to extend the road from St. Andrew’s Church Road to Pegg Road.
The board, including Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R) — a longtime opponent of the road project, agreed to pay $92,200 for 3.16 acres off Settlers Lane in California. The land, owned by Leon Anderson of Hollywood, was appraised for $101,300.
“We continue to move forward on this project,” said Commissioner Cindy Jones (R).
Design work on FDR Boulevard between Route 4 and Chancellor’s Run Road is about 90 percent completed, said John Groeger, deputy director of the St. Mary’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation, last month. A section of the road was already built behind the First Colony planned unit development in California.
“This 3-acre piece is one of the key pieces” in this phase of extending the roadway, said George Erichsen, director of public works and transportation, on Tuesday. The road needs to connect from First Colony to Old Rolling Road and then through the Hickory Hills neighborhood to reach Chancellor’s Run Road.
Jarboe has said the road should be fully built by developers, as they have already built the existing sections. He asked if purchasing the 3 acres could make it easier for developers to build projects in the area. “In this particular case, no,” Erichsen said. “There is no large-scale development proposed at this time.”
“Has there been any backlash from the residential area?” asked Commissioner Dan Morris (R).
“No, not at all,” Erichsen said.
There have been several community meetings with the residents of Hickory Hills, he said. The two-lane county road will use roundabout intersections through the neighborhood. “We’re going to make it a nice area for them,” he said.
Construction of the road from Route 4 to Pegg Road is budgeted at $24.7 million.
