Andrew Bean Shorter, 83, of Towson died Jan. 26, 2013, at Perring Parkway Center in Baltimore.

Born Jan. 10, 1930, in Tall Timbers, he was the son of the late Albert Lee Shorter and Fannie Margaret Hammett Shorter.

He was born and raised in St. Mary’s County, before moving to Baltimore in 1953. On Oct. 9, 1954, he married Mary Jane Shorter, his wife of 58 years, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore.

He was employed as an insurance underwriter with Zurich Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1994.

He was an usher at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Towson. He was an avid reader, always reading to learn new things. He also enjoyed gardening, cutting the grass for his neighbors, walking, bowling and golfing. His favorite place to vacation was Capon Springs, W.Va., which he visited more than 50 times. His greatest love was spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Andrew “Lee” Shorter (Barbara) of Phoenixville, Pa., Mary Catherine Shorter (Reza Fahimi) of Fallston and Elizabeth Jane “Lizzie” Shorter of Baltimore; brother, Charles Shorter (Margaret) of Broomes Island; and four grandchildren, Nina Fahimi of Fallston, Ali Fahimi of Fallston, Heather Amato of Morris Plains, N.J., and Ian Amato of Somerset, N.J. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Rose Saunders, Mae Thomas, Alice Henderson, Violet Purcell, John Shorter, Thomas Shorter, Richard Shorter and Albert Shorter.

The family received friends Jan. 28 at Brinsfield Funeral Home in Leonardtown. A funeral service was conducted Jan. 29 by the Rev. Greg Syler at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Valley Lee. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
