I take issue with the implication that there are actual vacancies to be filled on the Charles County Planning Commission. I think it would be more accurate to say that there are no vacant seats at the moment but that three appointees have overstayed their length of terms at the request of the majority of the county commissioners.
The reason the three are still seated is not due to oversight, omission or an overthrow of local government. It is due to a deliberate political decision to retain appointees who have publicly and reliably conformed to the opinions of the lobbyists who have won favor with the majority of the commissioners in the mandate to approve the 2012-13 county comprehensive plan.
While refusing to replace appointees whose terms have expired may not be an illegal maneuver, in this case it is a maneuver, it is very irregular, and the commissioners should appoint replacements for planning commission appointees with expired terms as soon as possible.
