Bowie officials are inviting area residents to attend a meeting of its community zoning and planning board as it considers what position to take on allowing a change of zoning at the city’s Melford business park.

The city’s advisory planning board will be meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at Bowie City Hall at 15901 Excalibur Road where the sole item on its agenda is considering allowing mixed used development at St. John’s Properties Melford development, said Joe Meinert, director of Bowie’s planning department.

On Jan. 7, the City Council chose to entertain permitting zoning changes to the Melford site, which is near the intersection of U.S. routes 50 and 301, but with the caveat that it wanted the input of the city’s various committees such as the planning board.

The planning board, which is composed of nine volunteers from across the city, is tasked with weighing in on development and zoning issues before the city.

“It’s allowing them to consider some course of action,” said Joe Meinert, director of Bowie’s Planning Department. “People can come and listen to their discussion.”
