Routh Virginia Chandler, 97, Popes Creek
Routh Virginia Chandler, 97, of Popes Creek died Jan. 27, 2013, at Hospice House of Charles County, Waldorf.
Born March 10, 1915, in Popes Creek, she was the daughter of the late William Hickey and the late Margaret Dorsett Hickey.
Mrs. Chandler was a high school teacher at Lackey High School for 31 years and a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Wayside. She was a graduate of the University of Maryland College and a member of the Tri-Delta sorority. She helped found and develop the Richard R. Clark Senior Center in La Plata and was a member of the 2-N-1 Club. She also belonged to the Democratic Club of Charles County and met with the Lackey Ladies Club each month. In later years, she tutored at Dr. Higdon Elementary School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Haislep Chandler; son-in-law, John Cook; and grandchild, Michael Robinson.
She is survived by her son, Charles T. Chandler of Popes Creek; daughters, Margaret M. Chandler of Laurel, Routh and her husband Wayne Widmayer of Mount Airy and Elizabeth H. and her husband Daniel Stine of Newburg; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A gathering will be held from 1 p.m. until time of memorial service at 3 p.m. Feb. 2 at Raymond Funeral Service, La Plata. Chaplain Kimberly McKnight will officiate. Burial will take place at Old Durham Episcopal Church Cemetery, Ironsides.
