The Damascus High School wrestling team swept its tri-meet against Northwest and Clarksburg on Saturday, thereby securing the Montgomery County 4A/3A West Division and the top seed and hosting privileges for the 4A/3A West Region duals.

The Swarmin’ Hornets took advantage of the marquee matchup with the Jaguars early on, taking the lead after the third match and never looking back en route to a 39-27 victory.

The meet started at 106 pounds, where Damascus’ Mikey Macklin earned a major decision over Dell Ngonga, 14-2. Northwest responded quickly as Jamil Garrison was able to pin David Creegan in just 48 seconds in the 113 pound class. In the 120-pound matchup, Nick Davis held a 7-4 lead for the Jaguars in the third period, but Michael Wilkerson was able to lock in a cradle and flip the momentum by earning a fall.

“Michael Wilkerson was losing, and we knew that kid was tough,” Hornets coach Jon Furgeson said. “We expected [Davis] to weigh in at 113 today, so when he weighed in at 120 the coaches kind of looked at each other, and I guess they didn’t know how good Michael Wilkerson is. He’s having a really nice season this year. Last year he couldn’t get into the lineup, this year he did a lot of off-season wrestling. He’s a little funky, so he catches people off-guard a little, but with his conditioning he was able to get the six points for us, and that set the tone for the rest of the match.”

Corey Obendorfer pinned Ben Whitacre early in the third period at 126 pounds to give Damascus a 16-6 advantage, and the Hornets would go on to win six of the next eight bouts to put the match out of reach.

Owen Brooks (138 pounds) and Jack Creegan (145) earned back-to-back decisions for Damascus, and Logan Brooks (160) and Caleb Baisden (195) each posted major decisions. Michael Scarfate pinned Darius Williams in 1:11 in the 182-pound bout, and Ari Cacopardo contributed a decision over Keegan Johnson at 170 for the Hornets.

“The last couple of years we have wanted to build something like this, and luckily it came down to the last match of the year — a home match for the division and the No. 1 seed in the regional duals,” Furgeson said. “[Joe] Vukovich is a very good coach and he had those boys ready to go. We knew it was going to be a fight. Each time we come out and wrestle we are amazed at how the kids are really tough and really focused... It was a great atmosphere — I loved it. The place was packed, and that’s what you want high school sports to be about — good hard competition and a lot of fun.”

Northwest was led by Ainsley Garvey’s pin at 132 pounds, while T.J. Patterson added a fall at 220. Jeff Moreno’s late takedown propelled him to a 7-5 victory over Johnny Fischer at 152, and Luis Beteta was able to secure a fall for the Jaguars at 285. Luis Beteta said he knows he and his teammates have a lot of work to do if they are going to have a chance at knocking off Damascus in regional duals.

“We practiced all week getting ready for the crosses, cradles, barbed wires and stuff, but they came out hitting hard,” he said. “They got the momentum and they just kept going with it. We need to wrestle six minutes. Too may people got caught on their backs, so we need to not give so many back points up. We just need to keep wrestling tough and work hard. They are a tough team, but we can beat them.”

Northwest defeated Clarksburg, 61-15, in the first meet of the day, taking seven bouts by fall.

Damascus also made quick work of the Coyotes with a 77-6 victory in the final meet of the day, posting 10 pins in the effort.
