Joseph Albert Markovich, 89, of Leonardtown died Feb. 2, 2013, in Callaway surrounded by his family.
Born Jan. 21, 1924, he was the son of the late George and Anna Lesko Markovich.
He was the husband of Betty S. Markovich of Leonardtown, whom he married on March 24, 1948, in Binghamton, N.Y.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph P. Markovich (Linda) of Monrovia and John P. Markovich of Waldorf; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas and Francis Markovich.
He graduated from Binghamton High School in Binghampton in 1941. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from October 1941 to September 1962. Campaigns in which he was involved included Guadalcanal, Australia; New Guinea, New Britain; and Peleliu, Korea. He retired after 21 years of service in September 1962.
He worked as an accountant for the U.S. civil service, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Va.
