In response to the letter to the editor in The Calvert Recorder on Jan. 23 [“Maryland should repeal the death penalty”] pointing out the negative aspects of the death penalty, I do agree it is vengeful to the utmost degree. But, it is legal and has been practiced for thousands of years. The Bible calls for the death penalty for many things, including adultery, blasphemy, disobedience to parents, etc. However, the difficulty is not whether it’s a moral or humane question or if it is a benefit to society. The problem is that death is final. When an unsaved person is executed, he is dead and has no chance of ever gaining access to heaven. If he is incarcerated instead of beng executed, he has an opportunity to attend Bible studies and come to a saving knowledge of God through Christ.
