Velma V. Dowell, 96, of Dowell died Jan. 8, 2013, in Dowell.
She was born July 7, 1916, in Cove Point to the late Richard E. and Elizabeth (Johnson) Humphreys.
She married her husband, Charles Dowell of Dowell, on March 11, 1933, and they resided in Dowell. Her husband died Jan. 7, 1986, and she maintained their home at Dowell. During their lives together, she and her husband operated numerous businesses, including a general store, a movie theater, custom farming and general truck and tractor services, and she raised their five children. She was the post mistress for the Dowell Post Office from 1956 to 1969 when she retired.
She was preceded in death by her 10 siblings.
She is survived by her children, Arvin Dobson in South Carolina, Shirley Catanzarite in Ohio, Vashti Fraser in Florida, Charles (Buckie) Dowell and Velma “Jeannie” Franklin in Maryland; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held on or near July 7.
Interment was Jan. 9 in compliance with her wishes.
