LANDOVER -- Patuxent walked away from the Class 3A-2A-1A South Region swim championships Saturday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex with a pair of trophies after sweeping the event.

On the boys side, the Panthers earned 368 points to edge out runner-up Calvert for the team title, while the girls collected 375 points to defeat second-place Calvert, which finished with 316 points.

“It was a good season-ending career to all the hard work and the goals, which was to win this,” Patuxent head coach Jeff Ganoe said. “At times it looked like we weren't going to do it with our lack depth, kids being sick, kids not being able to participate but it was a total team effort today. They're peaking at the right time.”

The 3A-2A-1A state meet will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the University of Maryland College Park's Eppley Recreation Center.

Patuxent was led by double winner Chris Kahl, who swam to wins in the 100-yard backstroke and 500 freestyle. Kahl needed 56.78 seconds to win the first event and 5 minutes 0.26 seconds in the latter event to earn his second medal. Both were regional records.

Teammates Morgan Duty (100 butterfly), Ronnie Forster (200 individual medley) and the three relay teams each won.

On the girls side, Ali Adams (100 back), Cassi Beck (200 IM), Ali Leap (100 fly) and the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams also earned wins for the Panthers.

The Calvert boys received two wins from Dan America in the 50 and 100 free, both of which were in record time.

Cara Mathers won the 100 breaststroke and the Cavaliers' 200 free relay team also claimed a win.

In all, 14 regional records fell, including 12 by county swimmers and eight on the boys side.
